Protein Engineering Research Group
The field of protein engineering deals with the alteration of a protein’s structure in order to improve the properties of various proteins for industrial use. Proteins are essential components of enzymes and they are widely used in practice and everyday life. Proteins are part of laundry detergents, they are used in the food, pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries, and they can also be applied to protect the environment or in military applications.
The research team is focused on protein and metabolic engineering for use in biomedicine. They develop both new theoretical concepts and software tools and multifunctional laboratory equipment used for the further development of protein engineering. With the help of cutting-edge tools, proteins are being designed with improved properties for bio-catalysis, biodegradation, bio-sensing, and cell cultivation and differentiation. For example, the team has developed a software tool that designs proteins and predicts the influence of mutations in humans.
