Aging is currently one of the greatest challenges faced by developed countries. Advances in medical care in the future may allow people to live up to about 120 years. Since 1989, the average life expectancy in men in the Czech Republic has increased from 68 to 75 years and from 75 to 81 years in women. People aged 65 make up one-fifth of the population in the country. Out of the total number of 10.6 million citizens, 2 million are seniors. Moreover, according to estimates, the ratio of persons aged 65 and more to people in productive age will almost double by 2060 and reach approximately 56%. With the larger number of seniors, there will also be more patients suffering from diseases typical for old age, such as heart failure, Alzheimer’s disease or live failure. Therefore, researchers want to better understand immune reactions and metabolic changes that occur during the aging process.

The research team is examining how the different variants of histones affect cellular metabolism and cancer, and it is examining how large types of histones function as energy sensors and oncogenes in different types of cancer. The team is also closely focused on the involvement and role of the immune system in the development of atherosclerosis, which occurs mainly due to the deposition of fatty substances on the arterial walls. The research is also aimed at examining the beneficial effects of short-term fasting on the increased effectiveness of chemotherapy in cancers of the digestive system.
